Personality; When we first meet Thor, he is a total asshat. I'm not going to sugarcoat it; we all know he is. He's brash, hardheaded, arrogant, and overconfident. Hell, even his father, Odin (get it? Odinson?) calls him a 'vain, greedy, cruel boy' and you know what? Thor has the gall to call his own father an 'old man and a fool'. Damn. Gall. Thor is the God of Thunder, as well as courage, physical strength... The reason he isn't in Thor House is that his vanity is pretty hard to ignore and is SUCH a big factor in his importance on being a warrior.
He does care about others... somewhat childishly, at least. It's pretty openly exemplified in how he just goes storming off to Jötunheim when Jötuns infiltrate Asgard's weapons vault to demand an explanation- and almost starts a war- and he never fights to protect something or someone else; he fights to preserve his own pride, if not just for the thrill of it. He's impulsive, reckless and dangerous at times, preferring to swing his hammer and ask questions later. He's definitely not one for thinking things through- no, that attribute is better found in Loki. In his leadership of Lady Sif and the Warriors Three, he has taken them on great adventures, and they have come to respect him greatly. The truth is, Thor is the poster child of Asgardian warrior culture, proving to be a formidable foe. As Loki points out, Thor could destroy the entire Jötun race with his bare hands.
Speaking of Loki... It's complicated. Don't get me wrong; Thor loves Loki dearly. It's just... you know, the whole 'trying to conquer other races' thing. Loki is a lot of trouble for Thor to be conflicted about dealing with, and if everything went his way he'd actually rather not fight him. In fact, when trying to stop Loki from destroying Jötunheim, it's not until Jane is brought into the argument that Thor actually fights back against his brother.
Jane Foster is someone who's changed him greatly, as well. Thanks to her, Thor has learned a little something of humility from her, as well as fighting in the defense of others instead of himself. By the end of Thor when the Destroyer is about to kill them, he realizes what he must do, and willingly offers his own life in exchange for the mortals' safety. Being on Earth actually did him a lot of good, and upon his return, Odin actually tells him he will be a wise king.
That doesn't really stop him from trying to take things upon himself and keeping things from others, though. When Loki returns to Earth in The Avengers and Thor must clean up his mess, he's quite adamant that he be the one to deal with him. It's a little galling (there's that word again!) to have to work with mortals, but put up with it he must. At least he gets to take him back to Asgard by himself- certainly Heimdall can keep a secret.
